About Me

Hello!

Thank you for visiting my living breathing website! I am a performance improvement practitioner, online educator, researcher, and writer specializing in commercial air transport operations.

Where I have been

For many years, I have lived in the online education space as both a student and instructor while balancing continued involvement in the field of aviation as a commercial airline pilot.

I have used instructional design theory and best practices to design, develop, and facilitate multiple online courses in topics ranging from human factors in aviation, organizational behavior, crew resource management, airline operations, private/commercial pilot ground schools, and survey design for data collection to name a few. I have been welcomed as an adjunct instructor/visiting lecturer at several higher-ed institutions including Miramar College, University of Nebraska – Omaha, Utah Valley University, University of Birmingham – UK, Boise State University, and Purdue University Global. These courses have been an opportunity like no other to share my practical knowledge with hundreds of current and future industry professionals. More importantly, I have learned great things from students and each course has challenged my knowledge, design, and teaching/facilitation skills!

I remain active in academia as a course designer and facilitator. I regularly participate in pro-bono consulting projects and publish in journals/magazines such as the Performance Improvement Journal and ATD’s TD Magazine. I support my professional community as a Distance Education Expert/Advisory Board Member and participate in webinars for various professional development groups such as the International Society for Performance Improvement local chapters and the NIH Strategic Change Community of Practice.

Where I am going

After many years of balancing these two parallel paths, I have recently connected the two in more meaningful ways. As a line pilot and aviation safety program specialist in threat and error data collection and identification, I continue to develop my skill sets. These include collecting survey, observational, and interview data helping to identify root causes and matching those causes with the right intervention/solution both inside and outside the flight deck.

My current focus is on research and data collection, analysis, and evaluation in the aviation industry. Though most of my experience lies in developing and implementing training and job aids, it is important to me to address the “why” by considering a multitude of solutions and implementing the right solution instead of the easy solution.

I look forward to connecting with you!
